DEI law heads to NC Governor’s desk

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — The North Carolina House has voted in favor of a controversial bill that addresses DEI.

The state Senate had already approved the measure. It now heads to Governor Stein’s desk after Thursday morning’s House vote.

The House vote was 61-47.

The bill bans diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives in any state agency and also bars any state money from going toward those practices. State employees who violate the law could face losing their jobs. State employees and agencies could also face a fine of up to $10,000 for violations.

Republicans say it will House Bill 171 will make positions and offices in the state merit-based, but Democrats say it’s an attack on marginalized communities.

NC Republicans pushed it through on the last day of session to get it to the Governor.

It will now be up to Governor Stein to decide whether to sign the legislation, veto it or let it become law without his signature.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
