Sunset Dunes park vandalized: Hammocks stolen, community piano destroyed

(KRON) — An unknown person or group of people vandalized San Francisco’s Sunset Dunes park over the weekend, San Francisco Recreation and Parks said.

San Francisco Recreation and Parks officials told KRON4 that two of the park’s public hammocks were stolen, costing the city roughly $600. The controversial park has been vandalized multiple times since it opened on April 12, the city said.

“On June 14, two public art pieces were vandalized: A community piano was destroyed and the Ocean Calling exhibit, a phone booth where visitors can ‘call’ loved ones who have passed away, was severely damaged,” a spokesperson with SFRP said.

The park was fiercely opposed by coastal residents. However, a majority of San Francisco voters agreed in 2024 to permanently shut down a stretch of the Great Highway for the city’s newest park.

The stolen hammocks will be replaced, the city said. SFRP General Manager Phil Ginsburg told KRON4 that the park will endure, despite the repeated acts of vandalism.

“It’s frustrating to see a place that brings so much joy and connection targeted again,” Ginsburg said. “But we will not let a few destructive acts dampen the spirit of Sunset Dunes. The stolen hammocks will be replaced and the park will continue to be a beautiful, creative, and welcoming space for everyone who loves it.”

On June 17, a suspect was arrested for vandalizing San Francisco’s Pink Triangle, an annual art instillation celebrating LGBTQ rights.
