New Orleans’ 25th Satchmo SummerFest announced

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — The 25th annual Satchmo SummerFest, held in the French Quarter of New Orleans, has been announced for Aug. 2 and 3.

Officials say the festival was started in 2001 to commemorate the centennial of Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong’s birth, and is now enjoyed as a summer tradition honoring the musician’s life.

Fest goers to the silver anniversary edition will reportedly get to enjoy two days of music across multiple stages, talks with “Satchmo scholars,” and a lineup of various foods, all to be free and open to the public.

Additionally, the “Satchmo Salute parade” is planned for Sunday, Aug. 3, proceeding from outside Armstrong’s childhood church, St. Augustine, in Tremé, at 11:15 a.m., and featuring the following groups:

• Shaka Zulu on Stilts
• Treme Million Dollar Baby Dolls
• Zulu Steppers
• Al Harris Brass Band
• Mahogany Blue Baby Dolls
• Sudan Social Aid and Pleasure Club
• Big Six Brass Band
• TBC Brass Band
• Sporty’s Brass Band
• Spirit of the Fi Yi Yi

Before the parade, the church will hold a “jazz mass” at 10 a.m., with accompaniment by the Tremé Brass Band, who will also be leading the parade.
