INFB: July 4 cookout prices increase compared to 2024, national average

INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana residents should expect to see higher prices for this year’s Fourth of July cookout.

According to a news release from the Indiana Farm Bureau, officials project that on average, Hoosiers will pay around $71.49 for a cookout feeding 10 people, or around $7.15 per person, a 5% increase from last year. The projected cookout includes the following items:

  • Ground beef
  • Cheese
  • Hamburger buns
  • Pork chops
  • Chicken breasts
  • Pork and beans
  • Potato salad
  • Strawberries
  • Chips
  • Ice cream
  • Cookies
  • Lemonade

Indiana’s projected cookout prices are also higher than the United States’ projected price for the meal. The release said that on average, the cookout price across the country is around $7.09 per person, 1% less than Indiana’s average price.

Indiana shoppers will see slightly higher prices than last year as they prepare for their fourth of july cookout.

“Inflation is slowing slightly, prices are leveling out and supply chain issues that have been prevalent for the last few years are slowly getting worked out,” Todd Davis, the chief economist for the INFB, said in the release, “so we are seeing just a slight increase in prices compared to the last few years here in Indiana.”

The release said the largest increases in price were ice cream and strawberries. However, the majority of the items on the list were similar in price to the national averages.

“When you’re shopping, look for the bargains on the protein side,” Davis said in the release. “According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, there’s more pork in cold storage, so the prices you’re seeing at the supermarket are generally going to be a bit lower. Ground beef, on the other hand, our shoppers found the price to be just about the same as last year, which is encouraging because cattle herd numbers remain low across the country.”

The release said that the survey was conducted in early June by volunteer shoppers across the state. The volunteers collected prices on specific food items from local grocery stores. Volunteers were asked to look for the best prices without coupons or deals.
