Illinois grants to revamp Rockford’s Central Terrace Co-op community

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — Nearly $1M in state grants are coming to Rockford’s nonprofit Central Terrace Co-Op housing community.

The resident-led affordable housing community, located at 1121 Bishop Washington Avenue, was established in 1954.

Nearly 150 homes in the community are receiving improvements through a $930,000 grant from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity.

Work is already underway to replace windows and fix electrical problems.

State Rep. Maurice West (D-Rockford) said ensuring the comfort of residents there benefits the city as a whole.

“Now more than ever, with all the excitement going on around in our community, which is great, but that also brings people who want to live in Rockford,” West said. “If we don’t have adequate housing for them, they won’t come. But more importantly for those who already live in Rockford, if there’s not some kind of sustainability to ensure that we can stay in our homes, it doesn’t help us as a community.”

The upgrades are expected to be completed by November 1st.
