ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — The Davis Park art installation that spells out the word ROCKFORD is no more.
GoRockford (formerly the Rockford Area Convention & Visitors Bureau), had the 4-foot-tall aluminum letters installed in 2020, coinciding with the opening of the Embassy Suites hotel.
However, as construction is soon to get underway on a $12 million renovation of Davis Park, the letters have been removed.
“The iconic ROCKFORD letters will soon have a brand-new home!” GoRockford announced Wednesday. “While we’ll miss seeing them along Chestnut Street and the park, we’re excited for what’s ahead at Davis Park! Construction at Davis Park is set to begin this summer as part of the City of Rockford’s transformation plans. Stay tuned for the new home of the ROCKFORD letters. We can’t wait to share their new home!”
The renovations will bring a playground, skatepark, and a small stage to Davis Park, which sits along the banks of the Rock River in downtown Rockford.
The large field has been host to 4th of July fireworks viewing events, Friday Night Flix, and large concerts during the era of the city’s On the Waterfront festival.
The park sits on nearly 10 acres, something the city knows will bring flexibility in terms of events.
The city says construction should be completed by June 2026.
