BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — As extreme heat persists across the region, Monroe County officials have extended the availability of local cooling stations through Saturday,

June 28, 2025, to provide residents relief from dangerous temperatures.

Multiple locations across Bloomington and Ellettsville are open daily to the public for temporary respite from the heat. While the stations do not offer food, showers, or sleeping accommodations, they provide air-conditioned space for individuals to cool down during the hottest parts of the day.

Cooling Station Hours and Locations:

Open Daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.:

  • Bloomington Fire Station 1 (Headquarters) – 300 E. 4th Street, Bloomington
  • Ellettsville Fire Department Headquarters – 5080 W. State Road 46, Ellettsville
  • Monroe Fire Protection District Station 22 – Perry – 3953 S. Kennedy Drive, Bloomington
  • Station 21 – Clear Creek – 9094 S. Strain Ridge Road, Bloomington*
  • Station 23 – Indian Creek – 8019 S. Rockport Road, Bloomington
  • Station 25 – Bloomington – 5081 N. Old State Road 37, Bloomington
  • Station 29 – Van Buren – 2130 S. Kirby Road, Bloomington*

Open Monday–Thursday 9 a.m.–9 p.m., Friday–Saturday 10 a.m.–6 p.m., Sunday 12–6 p.m.:

  • Downtown Branch Library – 303 E. Kirkwood Avenue, Bloomington

Open Monday–Thursday 9 a.m.–7 p.m., Friday–Saturday 10 a.m.–6 p.m., Sunday 12–6 p.m.:

  • Southwest Branch Library – 890 W. Gordon Pike, Bloomington
  • Ellettsville Branch Library – 600 W. Temperance Street, Ellettsville

Officials stress that high temperatures pose a serious risk, particularly for the elderly, young children, and those with underlying health conditions. Residents are encouraged to check on neighbors, stay hydrated, and limit outdoor activity during peak heat hours.

Pets are welcome at Monroe Fire Stations 21 and 29 but must be secured in a kennel or carrier.

For those in need of overnight shelter, officials urge individuals to seek services provided by local shelters, as cooling stations are for short-term relief only.
