(FOX 5/KUSI) — One of North America’s most endangered animals surprised operators of California’s wildfire camera system on Monday morning.
A camera from Alert California/UC San Diego captured a California condor taking a break from its flight on a tower that houses one of the system’s many cameras across the state.
The system’s cameras provide 24-hour video feeds to monitor when a wildfire breaks out, and the Blue Mtn Kern 2 camera caught the majestic creature up close around 9 a.m.
The camera is atop a tower on Blue Mountain at around 4,800 ft. in elevation and around 40 miles east of Delano.
Cameras from around the state have regularly captured images of condors resting on the towers.
The California condor is the largest land bird in North America, with a wingspan of more than nine feet.
The wide wingspan and air currents allow them to soar for hours and thousands of feet in the air.
By the early 1980s, fewer than two dozen were alive, but a breeding and conservation program has seen their numbers recover to more than 500 in recent years.
