Polls open Tuesday for San Jose City Council District 3 special election

SAN JOSE, Calif. (KRON) — Voters in San Jose will head to the polls Tuesday morning for a special election. Two candidates are facing off in the race to replace former Councilman Omar Torres after his resignation.

Torres resigned over allegations of child molestation and was convicted in April. His absence leaves a vacancy in the seat for District 3.

Both Gabby Chavez-Lopez and Anthony Tordillos failed to get more than 50 percent of the vote in the April election, leading to Tuesday’s runoff.

Chavez-Lopez brought in 30 percent of the vote in April, leading Tordillos with 22 percent. Tordillos made it to the runoff by beating Matthew Quevedo by just six votes.

District 3 includes downtown San Jose, where homelessness is a common issue. The top priorities for both candidates include addressing homelessness and public safety.

Both candidates are endorsed by the Santa Clara County Democratic Party.

Polls for District 3 voters open at 7 a.m.
