Outdoor activities canceled across Maryland, Virginia as dangerous heat rises

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — Summer is here, and that means the heat is warming up.

On Monday, temperatures were forecasted to hit the triple digits with a heat index value of up to 110 degrees. Several heat emergencies and alerts have been issued across D.C., Maryland and Virginia.

Additionally, multiple outdoor activities were modified or canceled due to the extreme and potentially dangerous heat.

Arlington County Parks and Recreation announced all outdoor activities set for Monday afternoon are canceled due to the heat wave.

Over the past two days, Arlington County has been under an extreme heat watch. Since then, the National Weather Service has issued an extreme heat warning for Arlington starting at 11 a.m. on June 23. The warning is expected to stay in place until 9 p.m.

As a result, all outdoor programming events that were scheduled after 11 a.m. have been canceled.

Officials said that for summer camp cancellations, early closing or relocations, all program participants will be notified directly.

In a post on social media, Stafford County Public Schools wrote, “We’ve reached the wet bulb threshold today [Monday].” School officials said all outdoor activities were either canceled or moved indoors to keep students and staff safe.

In Fairfax County, park officials announced that Wagon rides at Frying Pan Farm Park were canceled for Monday and Tuesday, because of the extreme heat conditions.

Maryland

Over in Maryland, Anne Arundel County Public Schools said all its school-sponsored camps and activities will either be held indoors or canceled. Camp and activity organizers will notify participants about cancellations.

“Movement of camps and activities indoors will be done where feasible, given other activities at those sites. For information about camps and activities scheduled by other agencies, please check with those agencies,” said AACPS.
