AUSTIN, Texas (FOX 44) – A Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) inmate pleaded guilty to the capital murder of a correctional officer.
The TDCJ says inmate Jabari Lewis pleaded guilty Friday to the murder of Jovian Motley. Lewis was sentenced to life without parole as a result of the plea.
Motley joined the agency in October 2022, and was 27 years old when he died in the line of duty at the Wainwright Unit in Lovelady, Texas on November 13, 2023. He was assisting other officers in restraining Lewis when he died.
The TDCJ says Lewis was serving a 20-year sentence for Burglary of a Habitat, a ten-year sentence for Manufacturing and Possession of a Controlled Substance, and two five-year sentences for Aggravated Robbery out of Dallas County.
The case was prosecuted by the Special Prosecution Unit (SPU).
