LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – With growing uncertainty in the Middle East, concerns are rising about increasing gas prices—both nationally and in Arkansas.

According to AAA, the national average for a gallon of gas has climbed above $3. In Arkansas, drivers are now paying an average of $2.85 per gallon, up seven cents from last week.

For people like Metro Vaughn, a retired truck driver from Little Rock, the increase is more than just a number, it’s a serious financial burden.

“They’re going out the roof,” Vaughn said. “Something needs to happen, and they need to go down somehow.”

From moms dropping kids off at summer camp to delivery drivers and commuters, many Arkansans are feeling the pressure at the pump.

“It’s hard to own a car, own insurance, and then gas on top of that,” Vaughn said.

Dr. Michael Pakko, chief economist at the Arkansas Economic Development Institute, said that for many households, the rising price of gas means tightening budgets elsewhere.

“Gasoline is one of those basic fundamental expenses for a household,” Pakko said. “When we see the prices increase significantly, then that means that people have fewer resources to buy other things.”

The recent jump in gas prices is partly tied to tensions in the Middle East, particularly threats from Iran to block the Strait of Hormuz — a major route for the world’s oil supply. Even in the absence of an actual disruption, fear alone can rattle markets and push prices higher.

“I mean, you gotta decide,” Vaughn said. “Do I take my medicine, do I go to the doctor, or do I pay for gas?”

Experts warn there’s no quick fix in sight, and short-term fluctuations are likely to continue. For now, Arkansans are left to adjust, and hope that prices stabilize soon.
