WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – Three years after the Dobbs decision overturned Roe v. Wade, Democrats are raising new alarms about the harm they say abortion bans have caused women across the country. They warn that President Donald Trump’s proposed budget would further erode reproductive healthcare by targeting Medicaid coverage and other critical resources.

“This is the result of what happened with the overturning of Roe v. Wade,” said Shanette Williams, holding a picture of her daughter, Amber Thurman. Williams says her daughter died because she was denied abortion care in Georgia.

“We have to fight this demon in order for other women, other families, other mothers, other children, other men not to feel what my family feels today,” Williams said.

Williams joined other advocates and Democratic lawmakers on Capitol Hill to highlight what they describe as the dangerous impact of abortion restrictions.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) warned the threat isn’t over.

“These anti-choice fanatics will stop at nothing,” Schumer said. “They don’t think their work is finished, even after such a horrible and wide-ranging decision as Dobbs.”

Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.) argued that the president’s budget plan would cut Medicaid, undo insurance coverage for abortion care, and defund Planned Parenthood.

“Republicans can’t deny that they’re actually in the business of making people across America sicker, poorer and more vulnerable,” Pressley said.

Republicans strongly disputed those claims. Rep. Richard Hudson (R-N.C.) pushed back, saying Democrats are misrepresenting the legislation.

“Unfortunately, our Democrat colleagues are lying to the American people about what’s in the legislation,” Hudson said. “I think it’s a really reasonable measure that says these big abortion companies shouldn’t get federal funding.”

Rep. Nick Langworthy (R-N.Y.)  argued that abortion providers need more oversight.

“Big abortion providers in this country have had no checks on them for a very long time,” Langworthy said.

Republican leaders are aiming to have the budget bill on the president’s desk by next Friday.
