Clovis man sentenced for deadly fentanyl overdose

CLOVIS, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – A 21-year-old from Clovis was sentenced Monday for helping supply the fentanyl pills that led to a deadly overdose in 2024.

Last year, a 24-year-old Fresno man overdosed on fentanyl and died. At sentencing, the DOJ determined that 21-year-old Lakota Tehya Wakley of Clovis directly caused the man’s death.

Between Nov. 18 and Dec. 9 of last year, the DOJ says Wakley referred fentanyl users to 53-year-old Austin Lloyd Kerns of Fresno, who would sell fentanyl pills and send him a cut of the profits.

On Nov. 23, the DOJ says Wakley received payment for connecting a 24-year-old man with Kerns to buy fentanyl pills. Within the next 48 hours, the man bought fentanyl pills multiple times and died from a fentanyl overdose.

Wakley pled guilty on Feb. 24 and was sentenced to eight years in prison on Monday for conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute fentanyl.
