Audit: Staffing shortages and outdated pay scales to blame for NC DMV woes

CHARLOTTE (QUEEN CITY NEWS) – Preliminary information has been released from the North Carolina Office of the State Auditor stating that ongoing workforce challenges are contributing to NC DMV service delays, excessive wait times, and return visits.

Preliminary audit results showed that more driver license examiners are necessary to meet the current public demand in the state, and flexibility in current roles needs to change.

The audit reported that the NC DMV’s dependence on temporary positions continues to create challenges. It said temp positions are harder to fill, offer fewer benefits, and create additional training costs from high turnover.

Of the DMV’s 142 temporary examiner positions, officials said 68% remain vacant.

Enabling flexibility to switch temporary positions to permanent roles and adjusting pay scales based on market conditions may help attract and retain examiners, officials said.

Without addressing these challenges, the audit declared that folks will continue to experience service delays, excessive wait times, and require multiple visits to NC DMV offices. The full audit report is currently going through the Office of the State Auditor’s quality control process.
