Woman killed, suspect injured in Marion County shooting

MARION COUNTY, Miss. (WHLT) – Marion County deputies are investigating after a woman was killed and the suspect was injured during a shooting.

The shooting occurred at the intersection of Taylor Cut-Off Road and Highway 586 in Foxworth around 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 21.

According to investigators, a witness reported that an eight-year-old child ran from a vehicle to safety unharmed. The witness said the suspect, who was also shot, left the scene in a vehicle.

The victim, who was identified as 35-year-old Shanetra Marie Batie, of Purvis, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Deputies later located the suspect’s vehicle parked behind Christian Hill Baptist Church in Foxworth. The suspect, 31-year-old Christever Batie, of Kokomo, was found in the woods behind the church. Investigators said Batie was taken into custody without incident and found to have an apparent gunshot wound. He was transported to a hospital in critical condition.

The investigation is ongoing.
