PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Talk about an unusual heist: Cash was stolen after the housing for drive-through ATMs were destroyed by a stolen excavator at a U.S. Bank in Clackamas early Monday morning, according to authorities.
Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office says deputies responded to reports of burglary just shy of 5 a.m. on Monday at the U.S. Bank on SE Sunnyside Road in Clackamas.
Deputies found the excavator, which had been stolen from a nearby construction site and driven to the bank, still running and abandoned near the ATM drive-through when they arrived, according to authorities.
The thief or thieves then “used the excavator’s boom arm to destroy two ATM housings, causing damage to the U.S. Bank building in the process,” CCSO said in a statement. A nearby parked SUV also had a broken window.
When deputies arrived, the suspect or suspects had already run from the scene.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office.
The investigation is ongoing.
