Steel Giant Nucor Hacked – Attackers Breach IT Systems

Nucor Corporation experienced a cybersecurity incident involving unauthorized access by a threat actor to its information technology systems.

The breach resulted in temporary limitations to IT applications supporting operations at certain facilities, prompting the company to proactively halt production operations at multiple locations as a precautionary measure.

Investigation confirmed the threat actor exfiltrated limited data from IT systems, with the company currently evaluating impacted datasets for regulatory notifications under applicable law.

Incident Response and Remediation

Upon detection, Nucor immediately activated its incident response plan, taking affected systems offline and restoring data from backup systems.

The company engaged external cybersecurity experts to assist with forensic analysis and containment measures, while also notifying federal law enforcement authorities.

These actions aligned with NSOF 800-61 incident handling protocols, including containment (isolating systems), eradication (removing threat actor access), and recovery (restoring from backups).

Operations Restored with Minimal Impact

As of the latest SEC filing amendment, Nucor has restored all affected production operations and IT application access.

The company confirmed the threat actor no longer has access to its systems after implementing enhanced security measures with external experts.

Crucially, Nucor stated the incident caused no material impact to business operations, financial conditions, or results of operations, with no reasonable likelihood of future material impact.

The breach involved common attack vectors like unauthorized system access and data exfiltration, though specific intrusion methods weren’t disclosed.

Nucor’s rapid containment through incident response protocols (ISO/IEC 27035 framework) and backup restoration minimized disruption.

While data review continues, the company maintains compliance with SEC cybersecurity disclosure requirements under Item 1.05 of Form 8-K.
