LEXINGTON, Ky. (FOX 56) — As temperatures soar across the region, many are finding ways to stay cool indoors. But for those who work outside, like Rumpke driver Douglas Smith, the heat is impossible to avoid.
Smith said the key to getting through it is staying hydrated.

Toggle“I got my cooler with me; I packed plenty of Gatorade and water,” Smith said.
While Smith is no stranger to working in all kinds of weather, he said the summer heat is by far the most challenging.
“Due to the hundred-degree weather, as hot as it is, and picking up all the stuff.”
Although the extreme heat hasn’t stopped outdoor crews from doing their jobs, it has led to extra safety precautions. Rumpke holds regular safety meetings to prepare workers for intense summer conditions.
“They give us plenty of Gatorade and water there at the office,” added Smith. “We load up our coolers before we leave.”
To reduce the time crews spend in the hottest part of the day, routes are starting earlier than usual this week.
“They encourage us if you feel that you need to pull over or take a break, just call your supervisor and let him know that you’re having some issues, and they’ll come to you,” Smith said. “Then if you need extra water, they’ll go get it for you.”
However, it’s not just Rumpke leadership looking out for workers; the community is stepping in as well.
“The customers, they’ll come out and actually offer you something to drink, Smith added. “I had a customer come out today and give me a goody bag and had all kinds of stuff in it just to say thank you for what you do.”
As the heat continues, Smith is encouraging others on his team to take care of themselves by staying safe and hydrated.
