Forsyth Fire update: currently 5,660 acres, lightning confirmed as cause

This is a developing story. ABC4 will update this post with more information as it becomes available.

UPDATE 2:30 p.m.: Governer Cox addressed the media in a press conference held in Pine Valley Sunday afternoon.

“It’s been incredible to hear the stories of people who were displaced saying, ‘I’m grateful no one was hurt trying to protect my place,'” Governer Cox said.

“That’s the type of attitude you don’t see everywhere but we certainly have it in droves here,” he added. “We’ve got 3.5 million people who are praying for you and who care deeply about you.”

UPDATE 1:40 p.m.: The fire has now spread to 5,660 acres and remains 0% contained, according to Utah Fire Info.

Original Story:

PINE VALLEY, Utah (ABC4) — The ongoing Forsyth Fire is confirmed to have been caused by lightning as it continues to burn around 1,640 acres in and around Pine Valley with 0% containment.

The Great Basin Complex Incident Management Team 7 (CIMT) said heavy winds have made it challenging for crews to stay ahead of the fire. As of yesterday, 14 primary structures
have been lost within Pine Valley.

CIMT took over the operation Sunday morning and are coordinating with Dixie National Forest, State of Utah Forestry, Fire and State Lands, as well as local organizations. Approximately 400 total personnel are on the scene.

Low humidity and strong winds are causing the fire to grow even further. The fire crossed the main road in Pine Valley on Saturday, then spread North upon the ridgetop. Slightly weaker winds Sunday are expected to slow the spread down, slightly.

Residents of Pine Valley, Grass Valley, and Pinto are under evacuation orders. Pinto was given a “set” status meaning fire could potentially reach the area.
