HERRIMAN, Utah (ABC4 Sports) – The most successful season in Utah Warriors rugby history came to an end Saturday night with a 33-19 loss at home to the Houston Sabercats in the Western Conference Final.
In just its second home playoff game in team history, the Warriors fell behind at the half 21-5 and were never able to recover.
Houston moves on to face the winner of tomorrow’s New England – Chicago game for the Major League Rugy Championship next Saturday.
Utah fell in an early deficit as Andre Warner scored the game’s first try to give the Sabercats a 7-0 lead.
The Warriors struck back as Lance Williams scored to cut the deficit to 7-5, but Houston scored the 14 unanswered points on trys from AJ Alatimu and Tautalatasi Tasi to take a 16-point halftime advantage.
After what appeared to be a second try of the match from Williams, the referees ruled Williams never possessed the ball as he crossed the goal line. After a Utah turnover, Drake Davis picked up a loose ball and rumbled 90 meters for a back-breaking try to give the Sabercats a commanding 28-5 lead.
Paul Lasike, playing in his final rugby game, scored a try to cut the deficit to 33-12, but it was too little, too late as the Warriors end the 2025 season with a record of 12-6.
