SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) – Happy Sunday, Utah! Hope you brought a jacket…Sunday’s feeling more like early spring than late June! A strong cold front pushed through overnight, and now a chilly airmass is settling into northern Utah. Highs today will only reach the upper 60s to low 70s along the Wasatch Front, which is about 10 to 20 degrees below average for this time of year.
The cold air moving in behind the front also kicked up strong northwesterly winds overnight, especially out west near Wendover, where gusts topped 45 mph. While the worst of the winds are tapering off through Sunday, breezy conditions will still hang around, particularly through the morning.
We also had just enough moisture and lift with the front to stir up a few showers late last night into early this morning…even some lake-enhanced rain around the Great Salt Lake and Utah Lake. Snow levels dipped as low as 7,000 feet, so don’t be surprised if the high peaks picked up a dusting of summer snow. Not much accumulation is expected though.
As the day goes on, we’ll stay cool and partly cloudy, with just a few leftover showers near the Utah/Idaho border. Tonight into Monday morning, skies clear and temperatures drop…some frost is even possible in colder spots like Cache Valley and the Wasatch Back.
As for the workweek, Monday stays cool, with morning lows in the 40s for most valleys and near-freezing temps in colder mountain valleys. A weak system clips the region Tuesday with just a small chance for a high-elevation sprinkle. After that? We gradually warm up through mid to late week, with temps returning to summer-like levels…but thankfully without the blustery winds we’ve seen lately.
