Good4Utah Road Tour: Red Fleet State Park

VERNAL, Utah (ABC4) — A 200 million year old dinosaur trackway open to the public is something you don’t see everywhere. But at Red Fleet State Park, it’s a path to Utah’s prehistoric history — and a great place for responsible recreation.

Red Fleet State Park offers visitors an opportunity to trek their way back to the Triassic Period. It is in the heart of dinosaur land with public access to trails and tracks, all hugged by the picturesque Navajo sandstone Utahns know and love.

Drawing in visitors from the entire region, and known as Utah’s mini Lake Powell, it’s a state park that just finished up some big upgrades, including a new day use area, more parking and plenty of paddling and lots of water toys.

The campground has also undergone a major makeover as well. What was once primitive campsites has a new look for visitors. Park Manager Cole Unsworth says it’s been a decade long labor of love, and says park visitors can’t get enough.

“It’s been several years since we’ve had big changes here,” Unsworth adds. “All the camping spots are brand new, everything is spread out when it used to be close together. It’s very nice over here.”

It’s also nice for boaters and anglers too. Red Fleet Reservoir is home to several species of fish, and what makes the park unique is its dedication to paddlers and patrons. It means calmer waters for paddle boards and kayakers, which you can rent onsite, and an easier route to the the dino tracks and Red Fleets’ infamous cliff jumping.
