Samsung continues to focus on what it describes as one of the most pressing environmental challenges: plastic pollution.
Since 2009, the company has reused over 567,000 tons of recycled plastics globally in its products, surpassing its 2030 goal of 500,000 tons.
Another way Samsung is addressing the plastics problem is through laundry design. As the manufacturer noted, every load of laundry can contribute to plastic pollution through microfiber release, which ultimately enters our oceans. To help lessen the impact, Samsung developed a “Less Microfiber” cycle setting on Its Bespoke Al Laundry Vented Combo, which reduces microfiber release by 39%.
In addition, Samsung’s external Less Microfiber Filter, which leverages its proprietary Ecobubble technology, takes this a step further, preventing up to 98% of microplastics released during laundry cycles from escaping into the sea. That’s the equivalent of eight 500mL plastic bottles per year when used four times a week, the company said.
Elsewhere, Samsung has created a Solar Cell Remote, which was developed to combat the environmental impact of discarding used batteries. Made with 24% recycled plastic, this rechargeable remote control also features a solar cell that can be charged by sunlight or indoor lighting, as well as by USB-C cable.
Microplastics are considered harmful because they can persist in the environment, accumulate in the food chain and potentially harm humans and other organisms. While the impact of long-term exposure is still unknown, plastic particulates have been found in human brains, livers, lungs, reproductive organs, placentas and even breast milk, suggesting they can accumulate in the body over time.
“Choosing the right technology can help reduce plastic waste without sacrificing performance or convenience,” the company said in commemoration of World Environment Day. “There’s still a long way to go, but every little bit along the way helps.”
