How canine cancer research is impacting human treatment

CHICAGO (WGN) — Humans share much more with dogs than just our homes.

The National Institutes of Health says there are six types of cancers in dogs that are similar to those in people. Researchers say some treatments developmed for days may also work for humans.

Dr. Timothy Fan, professor of veterinary clinical medicine at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is working to develop those new treatments.

Dr. Fan and other veterinary oncologists across the U.S. are featured in Shelter Me: The Cancer Pioneers, a documentary on the role of veterinary oncology in pioneering new cancer treatments for humans.
