ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — As a heatwave sweeps parts of the nation, veterinarians are warning pet owners about heat-related emergencies and what they should do to prevent those situations.

“Heat stroke is the big risk and actually death,” said the Owner and Veterinarian at Auburn Animal Clinic, Patricia Holms. “It happens fairly easy and fairly quickly, much more quickly than the owners would realize.”

The Winnebago County Animal Services Director said to be wary of the pavement in extreme heat.

“They’re walking on the sidewalk. They’ve got tennis shoes, flip flops, or whatever, and their poor dog’s paws are right on that hot cement,” said Roger Tressmer. “So people have been very aware of that. When they’re out walking their dog, make sure the dog’s walking in the grass.”

Holms also said pet owners need to make sure their animals are hydrated.

“Make sure they have plenty of access to nice, fresh, cool water,” Holms explained. “You can even put some ice cubes.”
