SALT LAKE COUNTY, Utah (ABC4) — A grass fire has closed I-80 near the border of Salt Lake County and Tooele County. As of 6:20 p.m., both sides of I-80 are now closed due to wind blowing the smoke and creating a traffic hazard, Utah Fire Info says.
The Unified Fire Department said that crews are on scene, and several different agencies are responding, including Salt Lake City Fire and Tooele Fire. The fire is located near mile marker 104 (near the Great Saltair) on I-80 eastbound.
Utah Fire Info says that the fire is 20% contained and is currently 45 acres. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. A fire is also burning further west on I-80 near mile marker 80, according to UDOT Traffic’s post on X.
According to Trooper Davies Sanchez with the Utah Highway Patrol, a large amount of smoke has affected visibility in the area. The road has been closed, and UHP is directing traffic in the area onto SR-201.
Trooper Sanchez said they do not have an estimated time of reopening.
