CHICAGO (WGN) — The city is losing its transportation commissioner right before stock cars race around downtown.
Department of Transportation Commissioner Tom Carney on Friday announced his resignation, effective July 3. The NASCAR Street Race is scheduled for July 5 and 6.
“After deep reflection, and in consideration of the current needs of my family, I have decided that the time is right to conclude my service as Commissioner of the Chicago Department of Transportation,” Carney said in a statement. “This decision comes with great pride in what we have accomplished together.”
Johnson said Carney’s work “has made Chicago’s streets safer, which has saved lives and made our city stronger.’
“Tom’s work will be felt for generations to come, and I wish him all the best as he transitions out of his role,” the mayor added.
The mayor did not announce a successor. Johnson appointed Carney to the role last year.
