INDIANAPOLIS — A child has died at a local hospital after police were called to a shooting outside a local CVS that they say was “likely accidental.”
Indianapolis Metro police crews were called just before 3 p.m. Thursday to a CVS near the 46th Street and Keystone Avenue intersection on the city’s north side for a person shot. Upon arrival, IMPD said officers found a juvenile male suffering from a gunshot and lying just outside of a car.
The victim was reportedly treated by officers on scene before IEMS arrived and took the boy to Riley Children’s Hospital. IMPD confirmed shortly before 8:30 p.m. that the child died at the hospital.
IMPD officials said on scene the shooting was “likely accidental” and may have been self-inflicted, but stressed that it is early on in the investigation and said officers will explore all possibilities. However, Officer William Young said police are not looking for a suspect.
“If you have a firearm, you are responsible for that firearm,” Young said. “You are responsible for being a safe gun owner.”
Young said that the family of the victim and several witnesses stayed on scene to try and aid officers and help the child. Detectives, victim’s assistance groups and IMPD Chaplain Office have all since arrived on scene.
IMPD officials said they believe this is an isolated incident and all parties involved are accounted for.
No other information was immediately provided by police.
