Friday forecast: Near-critical fire weather threat continues

(KRON) — A near-critical fire weather threat continues today through the weekend for the interior East Bay and the eastern Santa Clara Hills. There is an increased risk of quickly-spreading grass fires triggered by elevated wind gusts of 20 to 35 mph and low afternoon humidities, between 15 and 25 percent. Secure tow chains, extinguish cigarette butts, watch and store water near open flames, and avoid using equipment that creates sparks.

Yesterday’s high temperatures were much cooler inland as the onshore flow increased. Cooler-than-normal temperatures will continue today into the weekend. In spite of cooler conditions, yesterday’s humidities away from the coast only saw small improvements. Low daytime humidities mixed with stronger gusty winds will continue today and tomorrow, continuing the fire weather danger, especially interior elevated grassy areas where gusty winds will combine with dry conditions and dry fuels. Humidities will continue to improve into the weekend, and winds will back off on Sunday. Until then, stay fire weather aware. King tide coastal flooding is possible Sunday into the beginning of next week. Seasonal conditions resume early next week. 

Today

Gusty onshore flow continues today and tonight. Isolated gusts in the 40s and 50s occurred yesterday afternoon and evening, and similar speeds will take place for today. Temperatures will continue to be cooler, 5-10 degrees below normal for this time of year. 

Saturday and Sunday

Saturday morning will be chilly. Despite the cooler temperatures, elevated fire weather concerns continue due to gusty winds and continued dry conditions along the elevated interior eastern hillsides. On Sunday, wind speeds will ease somewhat and gradually improving Relative Humidity recoveries will help to mitigate widespread fire weather concerns.
