Ruben Marté Officially Launched His Bid for Re-Election for Sheriff+
Monroe County Sheriff Ruben Marté officially announced his campaign for re-election to a large
and
joyful crowd at the Uptown Care this past Thursday, June 12. He promised four more years
of tireless, transparent, focused and devoted leadership – keeping public safety and respect for
all citizens paramount.
Jim Sims, former Bloomington City Council member and current President of the local NAACP,
said that “Sheriff Marté has earned our thanks and support for an outstanding first term in office
– keeping all of his promises and much more”.
Shelli Yoder, State Senator, spoke of Marté’s extraordinary leadership and encouraged
community members to get involved in his reelection campaign. “Sheriff Marté is the kind of
leader our county needs—thoughtful, steady and deeply committed to justice that treats every
person with dignity. His leadership has brought greater professionalism, transparency, and
humanity to our local justice system. I am proud to support his re-election campaign so he can
continue this vital work for Monroe County, and I ask you to join me,” stated Senator Yoder.
Marté presented – with a compelling slide show – many of the “before” he took office and “after”
he took office slides of his and team’s transformational work at the jail. He underscored that the
success he achieved was made possible by being focused on public safety, respect for others,
transparency and collaboration. He repeatedly acknowledged his remarkable staff that made
such significant progress possible.
More specifically, he focused on ensuring the current jail is safe (for staff and inmates), clean
and fully staffed and that his staff continues to provide the highest degree of professionalism
through enhanced training and support.
Marté reported in-service correctional staff training has increased by 509%. His committed
approach to de-escalation and crisis intervention training led to an 86% decrease in use of force
incidents in his first year of office.
He also spoke about his efforts to reduce recidivism by increasing mental health and substance
abuse services in the correctional facility.
Marté, a 31-year veteran of the Indiana State Police and graduate of the FBI National Academy,
was first elected as Sheriff in November of 2022.
