LAKE COUNTY, Ill. — A canine officer with the Lake County Sheriff’s Office got a special send-off this week to celebrate his retirement after ten years of loyal service.

Lake County K9 officer Duke will soon be trading in his badge for some extra treats after a decade of hard work with deputies.

According to the department, during his career, Duke tracked down numerous offenders and played a large role in locating dozens of missing and endangered people.

“His skill, determination, and loyalty were unmatched,” a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office said in a social media post shared on Wednesday. “K9 Duke has earned his well-deserved retirement, and while he may be trading his badge for some extra treats and belly rubs, his impact will be felt for years to come.”

Duke will now get to spend his days relaxing at the home of his handler, Deputy Dwight Arrowood.

“He will enjoy a peaceful and happy retirement surrounded by love with the Arrowood family.”

The milestone did not go unrecognized, to celebrate his retirement, deputies rolled out the blue carpet for a special walk-out ceremony and party honoring the hardworking pup.

“Thank you, K9 Duke. You’ve more than earned your rest,” the office said.

Duke is not unfamiliar with the spotlight. Back in April, Duke and Deputy Arrowood showcased the vital role canine teams play in the daily operations of local law enforcement and the strong bond they share during an event bringing together high school students from across the 26th Senate District.
