Byhalia alderman, former mayor, mayor’s sister arrested in burglary case

BYHALIA, Miss. — A Byhalia alderman and the former mayor of the Mississippi town were arrested Tuesday after being indicted by a grand jury in connection with a burglary last October.

Former Byhalia Mayor Deborah Tuttle Weathers and Weather’s sister, Lori Wilson, were both charged with burglary of a building and conspiracy to commit the crime of commercial burglary.

In the indictment, Wilson and Weather are accused of stealing items from buildings on the victim’s property off McCray Road, and Richmond is accused of unlawfully and willfully possessing and retaining the items.

According to a report taken by Marshall County deputies, the victim said his mom and aunt took all the furniture, appliances, photos, paintings, tools, fireplaces, and electronics from his residence over a one to two-week period.

He does not reside at the property that is currently for sale.

The victim estimated the loss was around $150,000 and stated that he had proof that these stolen items were sold at a yard sale.

The victim told investigators he believed his mother had sold the items to cover her expenses in an ongoing legal dispute with him.

Weathers and Wilson were released from the Marshall County Jail on bail. Richmond, who had been out of jail on bond in an ongoing drug case, had her bond revoked.

The Marshall County Sheriff said she will remain locked up for the time being.

Current Byhalia Mayor Donald Hollingsworth said he was aware of the arrest of Alderman Richmond but couldn’t talk about the case.

“I really can’t comment because it did not involve the city,” said Hollingsworth.

In June of 2024,  Richmond, 50, was arrested and charged with conspiracy to commit a crime and manufacturing marijuana.

Byhalia police said they responded to an alarm call at Richmond’s home on Katie Lane, and discovered an open door and a shed full of growing marijuana plants.

Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics and Byhalia Police said they also found methamphetamine, guns, and a large amount of ammunition after executing a search warrant at the residence.

Curtis Richmond was also arrested and charged with conspiracy to commit a crime, manufacturing marijuana, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Despite the charges, Mayor Hollingsworth said Richmond was re-elected as a city alderman two weeks ago. The mayor said he doesn’t know what will happen to her seat now.

“I’m going to have to talk to the city attorney. That’s above my pay scale,” said Mayor Hollingsworth.

Hollingsworth has been mayor of Byhalia since April 2024. He said Weathers resigned from office in December 2023 over apparent disagreements with board members.
