Ancestral Odyssey: A new exhibition at New Orleans African American Museum

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Ancestral Odyssey is a new immersive exhibition at the New Orleans African American Museum.

Gia Hamilton is the NOAAM Executive Director and says, “We are thrilled to welcome our visitors to the New Orleans African American Museum for Ancestral Odyssey by Vince Frazier. We’ve been working on this for two years. This exhibition is art freedom. It’s about looking back and honoring our ancestors and honoring our elders and those who both fought and resisted.”

The exhibition focuses on the culture of New Orleans Black Masking Indians. As a blend of African, Afro-Caribbean and Native American cultures, Black Masking Indians, in many ways, are a representation of the freedom and history Juneteenth represents.

The artist, Vince Frazier, is a visual artist from London and has been in the creative industry for about 30 years. He was originally a designer and transitioned into a visual artist.

“To have this exhibition on Juneteenth is about celebrating New Orleans Black culture. When people come here, I want them to experience it and feel inspired and empowered. In this exhibition, I use video-editing, AI and other techniques. This reimagines Black Masking Indian culture in an African mythological sense. When you step into these different portals, you’ll enter a different realm,” explains Frazier.

The exhibition will be at the New Orleans Museum of Art permanently.
