Taylorsville Dayzz amps up security, safety following WestFest shooting

TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (ABC4) — Taylorsville city leaders said they would be enhancing security and safety for its upcoming Taylorsville Dayzz after a shooting at WestFest in West Valley City ended with three dead and two injured.

Taylorsville Dayzz will be celebrating its 29th year starting June 26 and running through June 28. The weekend-long community event will include music, entertainment, food, fireworks, a car show and a parade, as well as a carnival.

However, Taylorsville City said the adult rides at the carnival will close several hours earlier than previously planned, and there will be additional police on scene. The city will also be adding more lighting, including event light towers, and spreading out the carnival over a larger area.

The Taylorsville City Council also passed a resolution prohibiting gang loitering by allowing officers to disperse anyone with a known gang affiliation.

“While it is impossible to plan for every contingency, we believe these additional security measures and adjustments will help provide a safe environment for Taylorsville Dayzz,” said Taylorsville Police Chief Brady Cottam. “Our officers will be present, visible, and ready to respond so that families can enjoy the festivities with peace of mind. The safety of our residents and visitors is always our top priority.”

West Valley City Police said the shooting at WestFest took place after two groups got into a verbal argument. As police approached to intervene, a 16-year-old suspect allegedly pulled out a gun and opened fire.

Hassan Lugundi, 18, and Fnu Reena, 41, were fatally shot in the gunfire, as well as an unidentified eight-month-old infant. Two other teenagers, a 17-year-old female and a 15-year-old male, were also struck and hospitalized, though later released.

Taylorsville Mayor Kristie Overson said in a statement that the city’s hearts were breaking for the West Valley community.

“As neighbors, we share in the community’s grief. We are saddened by this tragedy at their own city festival that, like ours, is meant to be a community celebration,” said Overson. “We remain deeply committed to ensuring Taylorsville Dayzz remains a joyous, secure experience for all.”
