Rockford Fire Department faces 28% surge in fire calls in 2025

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — Fires in Rockford have increased over the last year, according to new data from the fire department. But why?

Fire officials said it is hard to pinpoint exactly why fires are increasing in the city, but said the increase in calls for service has stretched their resources.

Fire officials say 2024 was the busiest the Rockford Fire Department has ever been, surpassing over 34,000 total calls for service.

This year is on pace to be even busier.

“So as of May of 2025, we were at 233 fires. This includes trash fires, structure fires, car fires. But as of in 2024, we were only at 182,” said fire statistical analyst, Jessica Russell.

Data shared by the Rockford Fire Department shows that since the start of the year until May 31st, fires have increased 28% over 2024.

Arson investigator Michael Schaper said, “As a matter of perspective, when I came on 20 years ago, we were like, barely cracking 20,000 in a year. So now … 30,000 is starting to become sort of the new normal that we’re dealing with.”

Schnaper said an increase of development throughout the city has contributed.

“I think what you’re seeing is a big driver is, is the development, particularly on the east side of town with the casino and all the things that come around that that does drive, services up considerably,” he said.

Heading into the summer months, traditionally the busiest time of the year for the fire department, firefighters are bracing for an increase in call volume.

“The one thing that I would like to tell the citizens of Rockford is, rest assured, whatever comes our way, you will have the Rockford Fire Department ready, willing, and able to help in whatever way we can. And we will bring the best possible services to whomever when these emergencies come up,” Schn aper said.
