GONZALES, La. (Louisiana First) — Gonzales Mayor Tim Riley is calling for unity with the city council as they work to finalize their operating budget for this year.
He said he’s maintained an open-door policy when it comes to any budget discussions. But the fiscal year is over, and a full agreement hasn’t been reached.
Riley said his team has been able to reach an agreement about a portion of their budget, called the Capital Outlay budget, which focuses on certain aspects of the police and fire departments, parks and recreation, and utilities.
“I believe they really don’t want to express their real adamant opposition to the budget,” said Riley. “With the police and fire departments, we’re in agreement to provide necessities, to provide a safe community for the citizens of Gonzales.”
But what the council still can’t seem to agree on is the general fund budget.
“We have not had any real negotiation in terms of the budget,” Riley said.
In a meeting last month, the general fund budget for Gonzales failed to pass, and Riley said they need to find a way forward with the budget quickly.
“I’m a new administration,” he said. “I just came into office in January, and I don’t know if some personal things have seeped into this or what.”
Riley said he continues to encourage open lines of communication for the city.
“My administration is 100% open,” said Riley. “People can come in at any time and discuss the budget. Any citizen can come in and discuss anything going on in City Hall at any time. Gonzales is a prosperous city, and we’re doing very well. There is no need to stop the growth. We need to move forward with letting people be able to enjoy the beauty that comes with the city.”
More meetings regarding the budget are scheduled for the coming week.
We reached out to members of the Gonzales City Council for comment, but have not heard back yet.
