Fresh ideas and new mission fueling growth at MC Library

The Marion County Library is experiencing new growth with fresh ideas and faces as the public facility looks to the future.

The library had experienced a large shake up last December following the removal and arrest of its previous library director, Dana Scott, following an investigation into alleged misuse of county funds and a county credit card. On December 10, 2024 the Marion County Quorum Court passed a resolution to dissolve the then acting library board after County Judge Jason Stumph temporarily disbanded the board on December 5th.

A new board was established and the staff along with the Friends of the Library began the new year with new ideas and a revitalized energy to improve the facility. Library Assistant Anita Best says that started with a new mission statement.

The new mission has been put into action and new hours are being offered to expand access on the weekend. Patrons can now visit Saturdays from 10 until 2. Volunteerism has grown greatly since January with Best saying 9 new volunteers are now offering their time to help out with organization and hosting activities. The library assistant says updating their online presence has been a priority.

Best says they have been working to build up their collection of books and classical titles at the library this year and says any feedback or suggestions on the selection of material is always welcome. Marion County also boasts many families homeschooling their children and the library is working to add in new resource materials and activities to serve their educational needs.

Transparency and being open to the community is an important part of the new initiative.
