Fear and suspicion grip Chicagoland as ICE summons immigrants for check-ins

CHICAGO (WGN) – ICE agents continue to summon immigrants for so-called routine check-ins at immigration offices across Chicagoland.

Many immigrants are fearful and suspicious they won’t be allowed to leave.

A pair of United States Representatives were reportedly prevented from inspecting an ICE-affiliated processing center Tuesday in the city’s South Loop.

U.S. Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-Illinois) and Rep. Jonathan Jackson (D-Illinois) said masked agents, who refused to identify themselves, denied them access to the processing center.

That processing center has been the source of controversy for days now.

Krishnamoorthi says he wants answers.

“For ICE and Donald Trump to specifically target Chicago for these types of raids and these types of fraudulent text scams to get people to come in, only to be snatched away, is wrong,” Krishnamoothi said.

People were recently summoned to the center after receiving text messages from an unknown phone number, ordering them to “check in” with immigration authorities, only to be taken into custody.

“We’re seeing families ripped apart. We’re seeing children and families going missing,” Jackson said.

President Trump and ICE leadership recently announced expanded immigration enforcement in Chicago.

Krishnamoorthi and Jackson said they’re deeply concerned about due process and other issues.

Illinois National Guardsmen Andres Reyes and brother Axel Reyes said they’re concerned as well.

The brothers anxiously waited for their mother’s release in the South Loop. They accompanied their undocumented mother Ana Alvarez who, like so many others, were summoned to appear regarding her pending asylum claim which was filed close to 10 years ago, according to the brothers.

“She got a text message saying that she had an in-person check-in and we’re just worried about her,” Andres said.

“She’s always worked ever since I was little to make sure we always had everything provided for us, make sure we had good schooling,” Axel added.

After two hours, Ana was allowed to leave. Although she was too frightened to speak with reporters, Axel gave thanks.

“I’m very happy that nothing happened to her,” Axel said.

The Reyes brothers added they don’t want to politicize their actions today and said this has nothing to do with politics and everything to do with the love for their mother.

WGN-TV reached out to the Department of Justice for comment and is waiting to hear back.
