MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Tunica County Sheriff’s Office says no one was injured when a train derailed near Highway 3 Monday afternoon, but several cars left the tracks.
It happened around 3:30 p.m., right behind the ARRF animal rescue.
Danielle Lentz works at the rescue and witnessed the crash. She said it looked like the train was coming straight for them, and the cars landed less than 100 feet from their yard.
“I saw the trees start to go. I started to run up toward the front because I thought the train was going to come toward us, but thankfully, it did not cross the service road. The ditch stopped it,” said Lentz. “Rocks were flying at us.”
Deputies said two people were onboard at the time, but they were not hurt in the accident.
The train belongs to Canadian National Railway. According to CN, two cars were carrying hazardous material, but they did not derail.
The sheriff’s office stated that there is currently no risk to the public.
Lentz said the train was also carrying cattle cars and other vehicles. She said at least 20 train cars derailed and caused extensive damage to the tracks.
“As soon as it happened, one of my co-workers and I ran up there to make sure the conductors were okay and they didn’t have any injuries,” said Lentz.
CN Railway is currently on scene assisting in the investigation.
The Transportation Safety Board is investigating the crash.
