NEW IBERIA, La. (KLFY) — A man who was shot by a store clerk in New Iberia last week after allegedly trying to rob the store has been charged, authorities said.
Eric James Francis, 57, is charged with attempted first degree murder, armed robbery and possession of drug paraphernalia.
New Iberia Police received a call at about 10:30 p.m. Thursday about a shooting at a convenience store located in the 200 block of Center Street.
Investigators said a person entered the store armed with a “cutting instrument,” walked around the counter and attempted to rob the store clerk. A struggle ensued and the robbery suspect was shot by the store clerk, authorities said.
Francis was initially listed in critical condition at a Lafayette hospital. His present condition was not released.
Francis is being held in the Iberia Parish jail. Bond details were not released.
