OpenAI awarded $200 million Defense Department contract

(KRON) — OpenAI was recently awarded a $200 million contract to help the U.S. government improve national security using artificial intelligence, the Defense Department announced on June 16.

The San Francisco based artificial intelligence research and development company, known for creating ChatGPT, will perform most of these duties in Washington, D.C.

“Under this award, the performer will develop prototype frontier AI capabilities to address critical national security challenges in both warfighting and enterprise domains,” the Defense Department said in a statement Monday.

The will is estimated to be completed by July of 2026. The contract was issued by the Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office.
