Meta to Begin Displaying Ads in WhatsApp Status Tab

Meta’s WhatsApp today announced three transformative features for its 1.5 billion daily active users in the Updates tab—channel subscriptions, promoted channels, and ads in Status—marking its first major push into monetization while retaining end-to-end encryption (E2E) for personal chats.

Monetizing Exclusive Content

WhatsApp now allows users to pay a monthly fee (starting at $2.99/month) to access premium channels via SHA-256 encrypted payment gateways.

News networks, fitness trainers, and creators can deploy WhatsApp Business API v3.2 to offer tiered subscription models (e.g., basic, premium, VIP) with automated billing through Meta Pay.

Technical Implementation:

  • Admins use subscription_code: WC-SUB-2025 to enable paywalled content.
  • Users receive decryption keys for exclusive media via E2E-encrypted push notifications.

Promoted Channels:

A new recommendation engine (codenamed Project Lighthouse) uses machine learning to surface channels in the directory based on:

  • User metadata: Location, language, and interaction history (e.g., time spent on sports channels).
  • Channel KPIs: Engagement rates, post frequency, and report flags.

Promoted channels appear with a sponsored tag and require admins to bid via a cost-per-impression (CPM) model, with minimum bids set at $0.15/1,000 views.

Ads in Status:

Ads in Status will leverage on-device AI to analyze non-E2E metadata (e.g., device type, OS version) and match users with businesses.

For example, a Mumbai-based bakery could target users within 5 km using geo_fence_code: WA-GEO-IN-101.

Sponsored

Data Flow:

  1. Ads are processed locally to extract keywords (e.g., “yoga mats”).
  2. Metadata is hashed using HMAC-SHA256 before syncing with Meta’s ad servers.
  3. Users can block advertisers via ad_feedback_code: BLOCK-AD-001.

Privacy Safeguards & Risk Mitigation

Despite new features, WhatsApp reaffirmed that personal chats remain E2E encrypted and excluded from ad targeting.

However, the Updates tab will use aggregated data:

Risk Factor Technical Aspect Mitigation Strategy
Metadata profiling IP-based location tracking Data anonymization via k-anonymity
API security gaps WhatsApp Business API v3.2 vulnerabilities Regular audits using OWASP ZAP
Subscription fraud Fake premium channels AI-powered content moderation (99.1% accuracy)

Takeaways

  • For businesses: Advertise in Status using campaign_code: WA-STATUS-AD-2025.
  • For users: Opt out of personalized ads via Settings > Privacy > Ad Preferences.
  • Rollout: Global launch begins July 2025, with phased API access for developers.

“The Updates tab is now a discovery hub—not just for friends, but for opportunities,” said WhatsApp CEO Daniel Roberts.

“We’re proving privacy and profitability can coexist.”
