LOUISIANA (KTAL/KMSS) — A controversial bill in Louisiana is currently heading to the governor’s desk for approval.
House Bill 575, once signed into law, will target out-of-state providers that facilitate access to abortion services. According to documents, anyone who performs, assists, or supports an abortion—including manufacturing, administering, prescribing, dispensing, distributing, or selling an abortion-inducing drug—can be held liable to the pregnant individual.
Furthermore, both the individual carrying the unborn fetus and the biological father have the right to file a lawsuit for damages. Additionally, the maternal and paternal grandparents of the fetus may also bring an action. This legal action can be initiated within five years of discovering the damage, but it must be filed within a maximum of ten years from the date of the abortion. Some damages awarded in such cases could be a significant amount, amounting to no less than $100,000.
