LG Expanding U.S. Production

Will shift manufacturing from Mexico amid pending tariffs

LG plans to add capacity and product categories to its laundry manufacturing facility in Tennessee to help gird against impending U.S. tariffs on its Mexican-made goods.

According to a report by Korea JoongAng Daily, preliminary work is already underway to produce refrigerators and cooking products at the company’s Clarksville, Tenn., manufacturing complex. Those items are presently exported to the U.S. from LG’s factory in Monterrey.

“We have already begun preparation work for the ground and started building temporary facilities at our Tennessee factory so that it can manufacture refrigerators, ovens and so on,” CEO William Cho told shareholders last week. “We have done preparation work so that we can immediately respond without delay when tariffs on Mexico come into effect.”

LG already had an eye on additional product categories when it opened its Tennessee laundry factory in 2019. The 1 million-square-foot plant is LG’s first U.S. manufacturing facility and features state-of-the-art robotics and automation. It sits on a 310-acre site that affords ample room for expansion.

Earlier this year, at CES 2025, Cho said the company had put a great deal of effort into developing a playbook that factored in various Trump administration tariff scenarios, the Korean newspaper reported.
