How much will Pennsylvania get from national opioid settlement?

(WHTM) — Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday and 54 other Attorneys General announced a $7.4 billion settlement with Purdue Pharma and its owners for contributing to the nationwide opioid epidemic.

Pennsylvania will receive an estimated $200 million from the settlement, depending on how many municipalities sign off, AG Sunday said.

According to AG Sunday, the settlement resolves the pending litigation against Purdue and its owners, the Sackler Family. Both involved entities admitted their contribution to the epidemic through their large-scale distribution, manufacturing and marketing of opioids.

The Sackler family will no longer own Purdue Pharma or be able to sell opioids in the United States of America after the settlement, per AG Sunday.

”As Pennsylvania families and communities suffered during an unprecedented addiction crisis, Purdue and the Sacklers reaped the mammoth profits from their products,” Attorney General Sunday said. “This monumental settlement achieves the top priority of getting as much money as quickly as possible to prevention, treatment, and recovery programs across the Commonwealth. My office will continue engagement with municipal leaders to ensure millions of dollars reach every corner of the state.”

Directly impacted communities will receive funds from the settlement over the next 15 years. AG Sunday said the money will be used to provide resources for addiction prevention and treatment programs.

The Sackler family will also be forced to pay $1.5 billion, and Purdue is set to pay $900 million in the initial payment, AG Sunday said. From there, $500 million will be paid after one year, with an additional $500 million after two, then $400 million after three years.

Pennsylvania youth who know someone battling opioid addiction can anonymously submit a tip online at Safe2Say, a youth violence prevention program run by the Pennsylvania Office of the Attorney General.
