(WHTM) — While some lawmakers argue Pennsylvania is losing out to other states on cannabis sales, the Keystone State edges out its neighbors with at least one product: raw milk.
Raw milk is milk that has not undergone pasteurization to kill harmful germs, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health. New Jersey and Maryland prohibit its sale, and Delaware only legalized the product last year.
PA, on the other hand, permits its sale at stores, restaurants and farms. However, there are some exceptions.
According to the state’s Milk Sanitation Law, anyone looking to sell raw milk will need an annual permit to do so.
Keeping the permit depends on properly handling the raw milk. Cows producing raw milk should be fed, watered, housed and cared for in a clean and disease-free manner, the law said. Additionally, the milk must be promptly cooled and kept in clean containers packed by mechanical bottling.
The most important regulations govern the health of the cow. Raw milked can only be milked from cows that pass physical examinations, tuberculin tests, brucellosis tests and brucellosis ring tests.
Unlike pasteurized milk, raw milk can transmit diseases such as tuberculosis, brucellosis, diphtheria, scarlet fever and Q-fever, according to the health department. Pasteurization, the department said, destroys 99.99% of harmful bacteria by heating the milk to 161 degrees Fahrenheit for 15-20 seconds before rapidly cooling the milk.
Health Secretary Robert F. Kenny Jr. has previously said he wants to boost access to raw milk. However, the FDA still advises against its consumption and prohibits the interstate sale of raw milk.
Still, more than 30 states permit its sale within their borders.
