NEW IBERIA, La. (KLFY) — State Sen. Blake Miguez (R-New Iberia) has announced he will enter the race for one of Louisiana’s two U.S Senate seats.
Miguez will challenge a fellow Republican, Sen. Bill Cassidy, in the first partisan primary in Louisiana since the
Miguez announced his candidacy in a Facebook post in which he called out Cassidy by name.
“I’m running because the American Dream is worth fighting for – and DC phonies forget that,” the post reads. “Bill Cassidy betrayed our state, our President, and our principles.”
Cassidy drew the ire of some Republicans when he voted to convict President Donald Trump in his second impeachment in 2021, one of seven Republican senators to vote to convict. Cassidy, a medical doctor, also cast the deciding vote to confirm Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as Secretary of Health and Human Services.
“As your next Senator, I won’t bend. I won’t break. I’ll stand with President Trump,” Miguez said. “And I’ll never stop fighting to put America First. Bill Cassidy had his shot. He missed. I won’t.”
The primary election for the seat will take place April 18, 2026.
