Mines Spung wildfire grows over the weekend, 80% contained

(WPHL) — After starting last week, the large Mines Spung wildfire has grown over 3,000 acres over the weekend.

According to the New Jersey Forest Service, the “Mines Spung Wildfire” was first reported around 11 a.m. on Friday, June 13, by a private aircraft flying over the area.

In an update on June 15, the fire was 5,750 acres and was 80% contained.

As of Friday at 8 p.m., the fire was 2,500 acres and 25% contained.

In their last update, the NJ Forest Service said, “Forest Fire Service crews continue mopping up hot spots and patrolling the fire perimeter. Fire activity remains limited to creeping and smoldering within the established containment lines, and this is expected to continue until substantial rainfall occurs. An observation flight will be conducted over the fire area when weather conditions permit.”

The fire is in the area of the Carranza Memorial in the Wharton State Forest.

The New Jersey Forest Fire Service says the following road closures are in effect:

  • Local forest road closures
  • Tuckerton Road from Carranza Road to Washington Turnpike
  • Carranza Road from Forked Neck Road to Tuckerton Road
  • Bulldozer Road
  • Hampton Road

Fire officials say the Phillip M. Costello Preparatory Academy has been evacuated, along with the Lower Forge Campground. Five structures are threatened.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
