Darknet Market Archetyp Takedown by Authorities in Joint Action ‘Operation Deep Sentinel’

International law enforcement agencies have successfully dismantled one of the world’s largest darknet marketplaces, “Archetyp Market,” in a coordinated operation that resulted in multiple arrests across Europe and the seizure of millions in criminal assets. 

The operation, led by German authorities in collaboration with Spanish and Dutch police forces, represents a significant blow to the underground digital economy that has facilitated large-scale narcotics trafficking through encrypted networks.

A 30-year-old German citizen was apprehended at his residence in Barcelona on June 11, 2025, by a specialized unit of the Spanish National Police working in coordination with the Frankfurt am Main Public Prosecutor’s Office and the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA). 

The suspect, who operated as the primary administrator of Archetyp Market alongside other moderators, faces charges under Sections 29a and 30a of the German Narcotics Act for gang-related trafficking of substantial quantities of illegal substances.

The arrest followed an extensive investigation by the Central Office for Combating Internet Crime (ZIT), which tracked the platform’s operations across multiple jurisdictions. 

Archetyp Market functioned as a Tor-based hidden service, accessible only through specialized darknet browsers that utilize onion routing protocols to anonymize user traffic and location data.

Archetyp Market emerged as one of the darknet’s most prominent criminal trading platforms, facilitating the sale of various narcotics, including amphetamine, cannabis, fentanyl, heroin, and cocaine. 

The marketplace operated with sophisticated infrastructure, supporting approximately 17,000 active sales listings, 612,000 registered customer accounts, and 3,200 verified vendors at the time of its shutdown, according to the press release.

The platform’s estimated turnover of €250 million was processed exclusively through Monero (XMR) cryptocurrency, chosen for its enhanced privacy features that obscure transaction trails through ring signatures and stealth addresses. 

This privacy-focused digital currency has become increasingly popular among darknet operators seeking to evade traditional financial monitoring systems.

Darknet’s Archetyp Market Shutdown

The Dutch National Police successfully located and seized the server infrastructure hosting Archetyp Market at a data center in the Netherlands, effectively terminating the platform’s operations. 

Simultaneous raids were conducted across multiple properties in Germany, Sweden, and Romania, resulting in the arrest of seven additional suspects in Sweden.

Law enforcement seized substantial evidence, including 47 smartphones, 45 computers and notebooks, eight mobile phones, four computers, and 34 data storage devices from the primary suspect’s locations.  A total of approximately €7.8 million in assets was confiscated during the operation.

The comprehensive digital forensics analysis of seized data is expected to provide additional investigative leads, potentially exposing the broader criminal network’s operational structure and identifying other participants in the illegal marketplace ecosystem.
